The truth about Jesus will have a powerful effect on those who receive it.

I. Power Attracts People (Acts 8:9-11)
Aside from facing times when our only answer must come from a higher power, there is something within us that wants to see something supernatural happen.

II. Power without Truth Is Dangerous (Acts 8:11)
We know that there are other powers and spiritual forces around, but Paul tells us to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.

III. The Power of the Truth Leads to Freedom (Acts 8:12-13)
So, with a sense of mission he headed towards a Samaritan city to tell the people about Jesus.

God’s grace can reach even the worst of sinners.

Now, God does not take pleasure out of forcing someone to love Him, so He does give us a free will.

I. God’s Purpose Is Always Under Attack (Acts 8:1,3)
Whatever the reason, the heat was turned up in opposition to the purpose of God.

We have a nasty enemy who does not want anyone to receive Jesus or experience lasting peace.

II. God’s Purpose May Be Fulfilled Through Grief and Suffering (Acts 8:2,4-5)
Now, the ripples of Christ’s work were being felt not only throughout Israel, but in Samaria.

However, sometimes God may be saying, “I have a higher purpose for you than just making you feel good.”

III. God’s Purpose Includes Demonstrations of His Power (Acts 8:6-7)
When we share the love of Jesus with someone, we should be able to say with boldness that Jesus Christ wants to make them whole!

Sometimes people today never really hear the gospel, because they are so overwhelmed by their problems.

IV. God’s Purpose Brings Joy out of Sorrow (Acts 8:8)
Because Philip was willing to minister out of his grief and suffering, these Samaritans were able to see God turn their sorrow into joy.

Let’s look at 5 truths that come out in this account of Stephen’s sermon and execution.

I. The Truth about the Land of Israel (Acts 7:1-7)
God is universally accessible!
If you want to find an audience with God, let me assure you that you can get His attention by simply calling out to Him from wherever you are.

II. The Truth about God’s Leaders (Acts 7:8-41)
Those who reject God’s leaders are rejecting Him.
I believe in the priesthood of every believer, which means that we all can come to God, without needing someone else to act as a go-between.

The truth about God’s leaders is that He typically speaks through them in order to get the whole body of Christ to do His will.

III. The Truth about the Temple (Acts 7:42-50)
God is greater than our best idea of Him.
The temple was to be a place where God’s glory could be known by those who came to worship.

IV. The Truth about the Sanhedrin (Acts 7:51-58)
God will go to great lengths to show people the truth.
These leaders of Israel were stubborn and unwilling to change.

V. The Truth about Stephen (Acts 7:59-60)
A right relationship with Jesus brings freedom.
You could have bound him with shackles of iron, but he still would have been free.

In order for that to happen, we must come to see the truth about ourselves, that without Him, we are lost.

How to Deal with False Accusations
Acts 6:8-15

With God’s help, we can respond appropriately to those who treat us badly.

I. Live a Life of Integrity
It is very likely that Paul (or his Hebrew name Saul) was a member of the Sanhedrin as Stephen stood before them.

When we are falsely accused about something, a life testimony of integrity, honesty, and faithfulness is the best witness in our case.

II. Be Faithful to Keep on Doing What God Has Called You to Do
Stephen was faithful to God and faithful to do what God had called him to do.

III. Seek to Stay Filled with the Wisdom and Power of the Spirit
Being filled with wisdom and the power of the Spirit does not keep opposition of false accusations away.

IV. Entrust Your Future with the One Who Holds It
Even so, we must live our lives in such a way that we are trusting in God for our future.

V. Be Willing to Forgive Those Who Wrong You
Bitterness and unforgiveness will eat away at your spirit until there is nothing left but the shell of who you were.

God wants His people to work as a team as they go about His unstoppable work.

I. Team Players Must Be Willing to Step up and Help Meet the Need
Peter and the other apostles were doing their best to meet the needs, but the church by this time could easily have been 10,000 people strong.

I want to point out that we are all wired differently. God has gifted us all uniquely so that we can do certain things better than other things.

II. Team Players Must Recognize When It Is Time to Get Out of the Way
So, the apostles presented the idea to the church that they should select seven faithful men who would be able to serve the Lord by taking care of the food distribution.

III. Team Players Should Seek Qualities That Will Enable Them to Help Others
If you have asked God to forgive you of your sins and to be the leader of your life, you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you.

VI. Anointed Team Efforts Result in the Growth of God’s Kingdom (Acts 6:7)
Someone said that a lot can be accomplished if nobody cares who gets the credit.

Only the Spirit gives life to spirit, and we need Him more than ever.

Because God’s purpose is unstoppable, we would do well to cooperate with Him, pursuing His will for our lives.

I. Those Who Pursue God’s Purpose Should Expect Opposition (Acts 5:33,40)
You will face problems and opposition, but trust Me to help you accomplish My purpose in the midst of those trials.

II. Those Who Pursue God’s Purpose Can Weather any Opposition (Acts 5:34-39)
Difficulties may actually be a sign that we are in God’s will, rather than out.

Yet, instead of getting mad at God for allowing this to happen, they rejoiced that they were worthy to suffer for the name of Jesus.

God’s purpose cannot be stopped, because God loves the people He created and His purpose is to bring them back to Himself.

III. Those Who Pursue God’s Purpose Will not Be Sidetracked from It (Acts 5:40-42)
Sometimes life is really hard. However, I have found God to be totally and completely faithful and loving.

There is something He wants you to do that nobody else can do the way you can.

If you know the story of the first man and woman in the Bible, you know that God gave them only one restriction: Don’t eat from one certain tree or you will certainly die.

I. Obedience Is a Moral Obligation
God’s commands were never designed to be kept outside of a right relationship with Him.

II. Obedience Produces Authority
In our lives, there is also a sense in which obedience fosters boldness or authority.

Nevertheless, there are times when we need to use the authority God has given us, and it may come out loud and strong.

III. Obedience Demonstrates Our Faith
The apostles and the early believers had faith in Jesus, and they demonstrated that faith by obeying what He had told them to do.

IV. Obedience Welcomes the Holy Spirit into Our Lives
So, when Peter said that the Holy Spirit was a witness of these things, whom God gives to those who obey Him, he was emphasizing that the Messiah had indeed come in the person of Jesus, whom the Sanhedrin had put to death.

If we will obey Him in repentance and walk close to Him, the HOLY SPIRIT will live within us and give us the power we need to do what God has called us to do- that is to reach those who do not yet know Jesus as their forgiver and leader.

Now, people have many different ideas about what freedom is all about.

Let’s look at a few areas in our lives where freedom can be more than a song.

I. We Can Find Freedom from the Past (No more guilt!)
God does not think about our sins anymore after we confess and repent of them.

II. We Can Find Freedom in the Present (No more bondage!)
God wants to set us free from a sinful lifestyle, and He will free us if we ask Him to.

So, what I’d say to you first of all is PRAY!!! And if it doesn’t happen in a moment, don’t give up, but keep on praying!

Let’s show hurting people what Jesus is really like. Then they will come to Him and be healed and set free!

III. We Can Find Total Freedom in the Future (No more sorrow or pain)
We can find total freedom when our life is over, but only if we are trusting in Jesus for our salvation and aiming to do what God wants us to do.
